Neolithic
The oldest known cat burial, from nearly 10,000 years ago, was recently excavated on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Cats are not known to be native to Cyprus, so the buried cat most likely arrived there with farmers from Turkey.
The Neolithic Age, also known as the last part of the Stone Age, started in about 10,000 BC. It was during this period that people started to develop agriculture, including farming and the domestication of other animals. Cats probably domesticated themselves, living off of the rodents that inevitably thrive wherever people gather.
