South America
Kodkods (Oncifelis guigna) live in South America. Specifically, they are known to live only in the Patagonia forests of Argentina and Chile, including some small islands off of the west coast. This small range makes them particularly vulnerable to habitat loss.
Kodkods are small stocky coastal-forest cats, weighing only about 2 kg (less than 5 lbs). They are the smallest American cat, and the third smallest cat overall. Local people call them Guigna (pronounced gween-ya).
Kodkods are very closely related to and may sometimes even share habitat with the Geoffroy's cat (Oncifelis geoffroyi). They are both a mix of brown, tan, and gray, with black spots. KodKods however are smaller and have bushier tails.
